Derby is the largest suburb of Wichita, with 25,625 people in the 2020 census. It was platted in 1871 as El Paso, the Santa Fe railway renamed its station Derby in 1880, and the city took the name officially in 1956. Its real growth came after World War II, when aircraft jobs and the opening of McConnell Air Force Base in 1952 took it from 432 people in 1950 to about 5,000 by 1956.

Getting around
Downtown Wichita is about 20 to 25 minutes north via K-15 and I-135 outside rush hour, and Rock Road carries most of Derby’s shopping and dining. High Park has fishing, ball fields, walking paths and an amphitheater, Rock River Rapids is the city’s aquatic park, and the Derby Historical Museum sits in a 1923 school building.

Why is it called Derby?
