The lay of the land in Maize.
Maize sits on the northwest edge of the metro along K-96. The post office opened in 1886 and the city incorporated in 1915, and the older streets around Academy Avenue still mark the original town. The avenue takes its name from Maize Academy, a prep school that opened in 1894 and burned in 1910.
The homes
Maize has added a lot of housing in a short time. City figures show 3,419 housing units platted from 2020 through August 2024, in subdivisions such as The Coves, Arvada, Cranor and The Heights at Maize. That means a large share of what’s for sale is newer construction, mostly two-story and ranch homes. Older homes sit closer to the town center, and acreage is on the edges of town.
Getting around
Maize Road and K-96 connect you to west Wichita, and downtown is about 20 to 25 minutes away outside rush hour. NewMarket Square at 21st and Maize Road is a few minutes south for groceries and errands. Maize City Park on South Khedive has a splash pad in summer and picnic shelters, and the Clair Donnelly Amphitheater hosts the Maize Fall Festival each September.
